Natural African American Hair Health

There are some great herbal remedies to grow African American hair and they can be done right at home and they are chemical free.

African American hair is often very delicate than other types of hair. Many women experience a lot of dryness and damage because of chemicals from perms, coloring, or even pool water. Once the hair shaft is damaged, it’s often irreversible and the hair needs to be cut off in order to grow. If you have been trying to grow your hair for years and months, yet it still stays about the same length, then you probably have damaged hair. Your hair is growing, but it’s breaking off at the same rate.

Sounds like bad news right?

Well, yes and no. Your hair is damaged, but there are some great herbal and home remedies that can help you nurse your hair back to life. Remember that the hair is made of cells just like the rest of our body and it needs to be nurtured and taken care of in order to thrive (grow).

Stop The Damage

The first thing you to do is stop putting chemicals in your hair- perms and coloring are very drying and very damaging, especially to the delicate nature of African American hair. Cut down on the amount of heat that you apply to your hair as well. Blow dryers, curling irons, and hot irons all wreak havoc on the delicate hair shaft. I know you are probably thinking “What am I supposed to do with my hair then?” I never said this would be easy, but just think how are you going to repair and grow your hair if you continue to damage it?

Massage Your Scalp

Your hair is made up of cells, glands, and proteins just like your skin and nails. The building blocks of hair are carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, and sulfur. Your hair needs to be stimulated and fed in order to grow. An easy way to do this from the inside is by massaging your scalp. The most convenient way to do this is in the shower. If you massage your scalp thoroughly enough (10 to 15 minutes) then you won’t even need to use shampoo. Shampoo is very drying and strips your scalp and hair of valuable oils so try a thorough head massage to cleanse dirt from your hair.

Condition, Condition, and Condition

Oils are a wonderful home remedy for dry and damaged hair. They provide the deepest conditioning and many of them are all natural and organic. You should give your hair a deep conditioning treatment at least 2 days a week for several weeks. Try coconut oil because it has an amazing moisturize effect and it smells absolutely wonderful. All you have to do is warm up the coconut oil to get it to a consistency that you can work with. Massage the oil into the ends of your hair and work your way up. You should concentrate on the ends the most because this is where most of the damage is. Wrap your hair in a light towel and let the oil sit on your hair for about 30 minutes to an hour, then rinse.
